  • Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Ukraine must maintain the level of protection for the rights of national minorities in order to remain anchored to its European track

re The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is watching most attentively the decisions of the new authorities in Kiev, particularly those concerning the redefinition of the normative framework, given the abrogation or cancellation of certain laws passed in the previous period.

Given that on 23 February 2014 the Parliament of Ukraine abrogated the Law of Ukraine concerning the principles of state policy in the linguistic field, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses profound concern over a possible deterioration of the protection system for the rights of persons belonging to national minorities.

SarahInRomania: Romania's Katyn: The Fântâna Albă massacre - Easter Day, April 1st, 1941

re April 1st 2013 marks 72 years since the Fantana Alba massacre in Northern Bucovina near the village of Fantana Alba, today in the Ukraine. Between 200 and 2,000 civilians were killed when their attempt to cross the border from the Soviet Union to Romania was met with open fire by Soviet border troops. Although according to some data no more than 48 civilians were killed, local witnesses assert a much higher toll of 2-3,000, claiming that survivors were tortured, killed, or buried in mass graves. Other survivors were allegedly taken away to be tortured and killed at the hands of the infamous NKVD. However many it was, one was too many. It was, in effect, Romania's Katyn.

'In June 1940, Romania was forced to withdraw from territory inhabited by some 3.76 million, submitting to an ultimatum given by the Soviet Union. The Romanian administration and military were evacuated, and the Red Army and NKVD quickly occupied the land. The rapid unfolding of events caught many families by surprise, especially

re “Germany’s veto against Bulgaria’s and Romania’s accession to Schengen is populist and deceitful,” reads a statement by Hannes Swoboda, President of the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats at the European Parliament (EP),YV daily reports. He made this statement on the eve of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, which is to meet at the end of the week. A few days ago German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich warned that if Bulgaria and Romania insisted upon a vote on their Schengen accession during the upcoming Justice and Home Affairs European Council, he would veto the request. Mr Swoboda pointed out that the two countries had to receive a full membership to the Schengen area, while European ministers had to stick to the rules, YV portal writes. Hungarian policy for gypsies: 'animals' and should be 'cast out of society'

re Zsolt Bayer, a founding member of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, has come under fire for writing a newspaper column in which he likened the country’s Roma/Gypsi minority to animals. "Most Gypsies are not suitable for cohabitation. They are not suitable for being among people. Most are animals, and behave like animals. They shouldn't be tolerated or understood, but stamped out. Animals should not exist. In no way,” Bayer wrote for ‘Magyar Hirlap’ (5 January 2013). He also attacked the “politically correct Western world” for advocating tolerance and understanding of Roma, who make up around seven percent of Hungary’s 10 million-strong population and often are among its poorest and least educated citizens, WJC reports.

re Also, this attitude comes after a continuous intolerant and extremist approach of the actual government of Hungary during 2012. According to HRW, the deteriorating state of human rights in Hungary illustrates the weak response of EU institutions to abuses within its borders. Throughout the year, the Hungarian government repeatedly flouted EU and Council of Europe recommendations in areas that included media freedom and the independence of the judiciary. It ignored a ruling by the EU Court of

So we are not like an American State. We have our own languages, we have 23 languages in Europe.
We have a special identity in each of our member states and a very specific situation due to our history but what we have to do is to create every time we can, and a crisis period is a very fruitful period for this.
