Basescu, disappointed by "colleagues" Merkel and Sarkozy: They could've said 'We will be against your accession'

President Traian Basescu said on TVR 1 on Thursday evening that he would have expected French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel to warn him about their countries' opposition to Romania's Schengen accession. Basescu warned however that Romanians will not just "lie on the ground like worms" facing "Europe's biggest states."

"Overnight and without a warning, at least I was expecting that one of my colleagues on the (European) Council, either Mr. President Sarkozy or Mrs. Chancellor Merkel, say, 'Look, Mr. President, we will be against it'," Basescu said on TVR.

He added that the European Council is generally about solidarity. "Solidarity between us and countries. I think this was not included in the two countries' response portfolio," Basescu also said.

"I would like us to draw a conclusion. The two ministers' (the French and German one) attitude is incorrect to Romania for the time being and we cannot tolerate this approach," the head of state explained, underlining that "it's discriminatory against Romania."

"We cannot tolerate this because, if we lie on the ground quietly like worms, as many people tell us to - be quiet, hold on, they are the EU's biggest states... Yes, they are the biggest states, but the 22 million Romanians are entitled to respect," Basescu said.

"Romanians have the right to be part of Schengen. One cannot offend and treat 22 million Romanians in this manner," the head of state also said.

Still, Basescu added that he cannot ignore the fact only the interior ministers of Germany and France declared their opposition to Romania's Schengen accession. "The heads of the two state have not issued an opinion," he said.
