Basescu: Romania „will not throw stones” at France and Germany, but it won’t throw money either
Romania will have to fight – politically, not with stones – against France and Germany for its accession to the Schengen Zone. As there is no set deadline for the accession, the 271 million Euros provided by the budget in view of securing the borders should go to SMEs, rather than the EADS group, Gandul newspaper reports. The statement was made by President Traian Basescu during a meeting of the Cabinet.
"As there is no deadline for the accession, we’ll have to fight until the last moment – politically, not with stones – but we must keep in mind that this year we have provided in the budget 271 million Euros for continuing the border securing program, the purchase of good that will increase the mobility of border police and customs. I think we’ll have to carefully consider how we spend the 271 million Euros; the money could be turned to the SMEs rather than the EADS, to stimulate SMEs, instead of spending without knowing when Romania will be admitted in the Schengen Zone,” Basescu said.
In December, France and Germany asked the EU to postpone the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Zone. The European group EADS, which obtained in 2004 a framework contract worth 650 million Euros for securing the Romanian borders, has as main shareholders the French company Sogeade and the German company Daimler, with stakes of 22.46 percent each.
