Crimean Tatars Decline to Participate in Ukraininan Presidential Council of Mr. Yanukovych

The Crimean Tatar leadership declined to accept the invitation of President Yanukovych to serve on the newly appointed Presidential Council of Crimean Tatars.

Yanukovych had arranged a meeting for Crimean Tatar organizations, including the opponents of the Mejlis. The members of the Mejlis and their supporters, however, declined to attend the meeting. Yanukovych was disappointed, even upset. The Crimean Tatar leader Jemilev explained that such a meeting with the Mejlis members and the President can only take place in the format of the Presidential Council of the Crimean Tatar People.

The invitation to the meeting of some Crimean Tatars, whom the Mejlis considers provocateurs or Russian agents, was seen by the Mejlis as a an insult and a move to split the Crimean Tatar community.
