Himni i Flamurit (Pledge to the Flag), the national anthem of Albania, Lyrics – the Albanian poet Asdreni, Music - the Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu
Himni i Flamurit (in English: Hymn to the Flag) is the national anthem of Albania. The words were written by the Albanian poet Asdreni (Aleksander Stavre Drenova). The hymn was first published as a poem in Liri e Shqipërisë (in English: Freedom of Albania), an Albanian newspaper in Sofia, Bulgaria on April 21, 1912. It was later printed in a volume of poems by Drenova titled Ëndra e lotë (in English: Dreams and tears), which was published in Bucharest, Romania.
The music of the anthem was composed by the Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu, originally for the song "Pe-al nostru steag e scris Unire" (or "E scris pe tricolor unire", English: ”On our flag is written: Unity!”).
The melody of this Romanian patriotic song is the same that was later adopted as the national anthem of Albania. It was composed in 1880 by Ciprian Porumbescu (1853-1883), the text written by Andrei Barseanu (1858-1922). The first line means "On our flag is written: Unity!".
In 1912 the Albanian poet Asdreni wrote his poem "Betimi mi flamur" ("Pledge to the Flag") on Porumbescu's music, which later the year became the national anthem of Albania.
