Hungary could risk expulsion from EU, Austria's Der Standard writes

If the Lisbon Treaty allows a European Union member state to be expelled for seriously and repeatedly violating basic principles of the EU, then Hungary could be expelled, Austrian daily Der Standard recently opined. It is not clear whether the international agreement makes it possible to take this step, the paper added.

The problem is that regulations pertaining to the budget in the new constitution go against basic EU principles, the daily wrote. It makes it possible for members of the current governing party Fidesz to obstruct the work of the next government even if the party loses the next elections to be held in 2014. It also makes it impossible for Hungary to ever join the euro zone, the paper pointed out.
