OSCE s Parliamentary Assembly asks for withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova s Transnistria
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has backed the Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu s request that Russia should withdraw its troops and armament from Transnistria. It also urged the Russian Federation to resume five plus two negotiations on a settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, the Moldovan parliamentary press service has said.
A Moldovan parliamentary delegation participated in the annual meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly in Oslo on 6-10 June, during which a resolution on Moldova was adopted.
According to the resolution, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly asked for the resumption of talks in the five plus two format which includes Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE as mediators and the EU and the USA as observers. The resolution said that the main goal of the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict was to identify a legal status for the Transnistrian region within Moldova s internationally recognized borders.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly said that the consolidation of dialogue between public organizations and institutions from the two banks of the Dniester and of direct ties would help bolstering confidence and safety. It called on the Russian Federation to resume and complete the withdrawal of its troops and ammunition from Moldova s territory in line with the international legislation and with its commitments towards the OSCE.
The OSCE body also urged all the participants in the settlement process to hold consultations in order to transform the current peacekeeping mechanism into a multinational civil mission with international mandate.
The annual meeting was attended by over 300 deputies of the parliaments of the OSCE s 56 member states.
