Romanian president, Traian Basescu, speaks out for United States of Europe

Romania’s President Traian Basescu said on Thursday he was in favour of creating the United States of Europe and pointed out that Europe would be able to remain an economic power only by ceding sovereignty.

“Only by a massive ceding of sovereignty could Europe remain an economic and military power. (…) Otherwise, Europe will only remain in the history book of the world, where you can read about the most sophisticated and important culture, will have a rich history behind,” Traian Basescu said, while at a Summer School of Young Romanians from the Diaspora held in Sulina, situated at the mouth of the Danube.

“When you lack economic power, you cannot be a military power either. Attacking Libya is to no avail, since you don’t win the war, and security is of essence. Security can only be provided with money, and the money can only be made having a top-performing economy. A fragmented economy with different policies in 27 states won’t make us competitive economically wise. We must decide fast, in the next 2 to 3 years, whether to create the United States of Europe”, Mediafax quoted Basescu as saying.

The head of state described the European Union’s future as “uncertain” unless the “necessary decisions are taken to make the EU operable”.
