The discrimination of the Romanian minority in Bulgaria - info
The Romanian minority in Bulgaria is concentrated in the northwestern part of the country, in the Provinces of: Vidin, Vratsa and Pleven. They speak the Oltenian variety of the Romanian language. In southwestern Bulgaria lives also a very small Aromanian population, such as in the village Peshtera.
More that 150.000 Romanians live in Bulgaria. In this country, Romanians are not recognized as a national minority, but as an ethnic group and they don't enjoy ethnic rights in schools and churches since the Interwar period.
Romanians in Bulgaria can’t send the children to Romanian schools and are under investigation if they do it. The private payd classes of Romanian language had on Saturdays and Sundays in some villages in private houses, have attracted the interest of the Bulgarian Inteligence service.
Thus, the leaders of the Romanian community and the Romanian teachers have been intimidated by the Special Forces. The same blackmail has been used for children and their parents were threathened that they will loose their jobs if they continue to send the children to this private Romanian language clases.
