The Highway Ring around the Black Sea

The memorandum on the development of the Highway Ring around the Black Sea was signed by the member states of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) on Apr. 19, 2007 at their meeting in Belgrade. The BSEC governments acknowledge serious difficulties in international automobile transportation in the region and the need for concerted efforts in modernizing the existing roads and building new ones.

The memorandum stipulates the construction of a 7,140-km-long high-capacity ring highway via Edirne, Istanbul, Samsun and Trabzon (Turkey), Batumi and Poti (Georgia), Novorossiisk, Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog (Russia), Mariupol and Odesa (Ukraine), Chisinau (Moldova), Poiesti, Bucharest, Giurgiu with the alternative rute Bucharest-Constanta (Romania), Haskovo (Bulgaria), Komotini and Aleksandroupolus (Greece).

The goal of the future highway is to boost trade, economic, humanitarian and tourism ties in the Black Sea region.
