The leaders of the Romanian Community in Serbia protest against the attempt of the Serbian authorities to destroy a belfry of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Timoc, Serbia.

The Serbian authorities attempted on 6th December 2010 to destroy a Belfry of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Sipicova, Zaicear, the region of Timoc, Serbia.

Timoc region of Serbia is traditionally inhabited by 300.000 Romanians (called Vlachs by the Serbian authorities).

The attempt of the Serbian authorities, on 6th December, to destroy a belfry of the Romanian Orthodox Church risks creating diplomatic tensions between Romania and Serbia.

The Serbian authorities argued that the Belfry did not have authorization while the leaders of Romanian community in Serbia answered that according to the Serbian law there is no need for an authorization. The authorization is asked only for the Church not the Belfry.
Also, it seems that the Serbian Belfry on the same locality, Sipicova, do not have authorization but none asks for it to be destroyed…

Romanian senators have asked the Romanian Government to stop the unconditional support of Serbia for European integration until the Serbian authorities will respect the right of the Romanian (Vlach) community to have its own churches, media and education in mother tongue.
