The persecution of Romanians (Vlachs) in Timoc, Serbia

Sorin Ghica writes for Adevarul.ro about the actions of the Serbian authorithies that continue the harassment of the Romanians in Timoc(k) Valley. Before the national census that will take place at the begining of October 2011, the authorities in Belgrade prepare the incarceration of the Romanian leaders in Timoc Valley, Serbia.

Dragan Demic, Bojan Trailovic şi Milica Nesic, representatives of Romanian Democratic Party in Serbia (PDRS) are under trial for an alleged falsification of the lists for the elections for the National Councils of minorities held in June 2010.

The elections have been preceded by an aggresive camaign of the Serbian authorities against those that joined the Romanian lists with mass investigations and intimidations of the police and accuzations that Romania would atempt to assimilate the Vlachs in Timoc. Over 300 locals from Petrovac and Pojarevac have been taken during the night from their houses by the police. Those have been threatened and called „traitors” for the „guilt” to join the Romanian election lists. Dragan Demic, Bojan Trailovic and Milica Nesic have neen indicted and judged by the Petrovac Court. The representatives of the Romanians in Timoc Valley say the trial has been intentionally prolonged throught the usless citation of hundreds of witnesses. The final verdict will be on 6 September 2011, less than a month before the national census.

„There are folse acusations, aimed to intimidate, taken into consideration the close census. They want to intimidate people not to declare Romanians or Vlachs , intimidations they also used last year at the elections for the National Councils of minorities” declared for "Adevărul" Predrag Balasevic, the leader of PDRS.

The intimidation actions against the Romanians in Timoc do not stop here. The Romanian Orthodox Protopresbyterate of „Dacia Ripensis” with the headquarter in Negotin (Serbia), under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Ortodox Church has been a „favourite” target of the Serb extremists. Just few days ago, unknown persons have breaked the cross at the emtrence in the administrative headquarter of the Protopresbyterate . The priest Bojan Alexandrovic has anounced the police for the vandalization of the christian symbols.

Another very serious incident happend last week. In the vilage of Sipicova, unknown person fired on the direction of the priest Bojan Alexandrovic . The police has also under ”investigation” tis case...
