UN Economic Commission for Europe slams Ukraine over Bystroe Canal - infringement of the Espoo Convention

Ukraine does not fulfill its obligations under the Espoo Convention and continues works on the Bystroe Canal, a letter from the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s executive secretary to Ukrainian Deputy PM Hrihori Nemiria reads. On a tough tone, the letter asks Ukraine to halt all works on Bystroe canal, including construction or maintenance works, HotNews reported yesterday. Continuing works on the canal is in violation with Espoo Convention committee requirements, the letter says, underlining that environment impact assessment on the project is still ongoing.

“The committee finds that Ukraine continues to be in violation of its obligations, as determined by the Convention (…),” according to the document, which also warns that Kiev might be sanctioned if it continues works on the canal.
